Members of the South Carolina Barbecue Association recently partnered with a local barbecue eatery to treat over 100 senior citizens to a barbecue luncheon with all the fixings. Seeking a way to show appreciation of senior citizens, SCBA Senior Judge Tom Corwin petitioned Governor Mark Sanford to declare October, "Senior Q Month."
The Governor responded by issuing an official proclamation doing just that. The proclamation was warmly received when read by Corwin to the luncheon attendees at Maxy Gregg Park's Capital Senior Center.
"There's a national movement in BBQ circles to have October declared "Senior Q Month" explained Corwin. "I decided to write to the Governor and ask for his help. I was really excited when he responded with the proclamation", he added.
Delighted by the proclamation, Corwin set out to organize the event. He raised approximately $350 toward the cost of the meal from SCBA judges who were attending the recent Carolina Q Cup. Graciously, Robin Hudson of Hudson's Smokehouse in Lexington provided the rest. SCBA volunteers served the delicious barbecue, barbecued chicken, baked beans, slaw and banana pudding.
"Everyone had such a wonderful time and the elderly attendees were truly grateful for the luncheon, said Corwin. "We hope to make this an annual event".
