Mike,
I did my Senior 'Q thing about 3 weeks ago, ended up smoking 4 pork
butts, and pulled & packaged the meat in 12 big baggies ( about 1.5# of
pulled pork in each baggie ) ... and we delivered those (along with a
package of buns & a small bottle of sauce) to 12 elderly homes ... some of
them couples ... some of them disabled & homebound, but all elderly &
trying to maintain their independent-living status, with the support
services of of a local agency that advocates independent living for
seniors.
The recipients were notified in advance, that I was coming & all the folks
were very happy to see me arrive with the bbq ... but more than the bbq,
they appreciated that they had not been *forgotten* ... and all of them
wanted to chat with me ... more than anything they just wanted to talk to
someone ~ so I spent a lot of time that day listening to stories about how
they used to bbq ... about their grandchildren ... about their *glory
days*, so to speak. By the end of the day, I was running a couple hours
late, but everyone understood why.
ALL of them gave me something in return ~ cookies, a piece of cake, a lil'
jar of homemade jelly, etc .... these were some of the tangible things they
gave back, but the intangible thing they all gave is what touched me the
most ... and that was LOVE.
